Networked Organisms and their Habitats

Noah helps people discover local wildlife and connects aspiring citizen scientists with current research projects focused on documenting various plant and animal species. Think of noah as a tool that nature lovers can use to explore and document local wildlife and as a common technology platform that research groups can use to harness the power of citizen scientists everywhere. FungiFest @ Machine Projects

From January 16th – 23rd Machine Project and the greater Los Angeles area will be consumed by fungi and molds. Everyone is strongly encouraged to bring mushroom specimens to the events, whether you find them growing in your yard, behind your toilet or in the woods. Our resident mushroom and mold expert, Bob Cummings of Santa Barbara City College, will be on hand to drop knowledge and guide us in identification. We also plan to create a book, cataloguing… Continue

Holiday Party Connections

A week or so ago at a holiday party, I met a man named Steve Caputo. He shared some great information and links with me. They are posted below. He also told me that he once took a botany class with the one and only Gary Lincoff!

..."The scientist I was telling you about is Paul Mankiewicz, who is the director of the Gaia Institute, which is based in City Island. Paul is a visionary but also has lots of experience building ecologically based projects. NYC is working with Gaia to pilot… Continue

Ecovative Design EcoCradle Dan Saelinger

Your next toilet may come packed in fertilizer for your garden. EcoCradle is the only treeless, biodegradable shipping material that can be molded into as many shapes as polystyrene, a.k.a. Styrofoam, so it can protect objects of any size or weight.

Ecovative Design fills a reusable mold with agricultural waste like rice husks and sprays on mushroom root cells, which eat the husks and grow… Continue

“Where shall we draw the line?” I said if more than

forty people were involved it might be difficult.

Something like that number registered for the

course, but when the field trips actually took

place, there were never more than twenty people in

the woods. Sometimes attendance dropped to a mere

dozen. I… Continue

Glowing Shrooms

Seven new “glow in the dark” species of mushrooms were discovered around the globe this October. Four of the species are completely new to the shroom family while the other three have adapted this new trend towards luminescence, making a total of 71 known species to emit light. "If daylight was not so bright you could see them during the day, but the greenish-yellow light does not stand out against daylight so we cannot visualize them," lead researcher… Continue
